Meet Nong Poonsukwattana, Portland restaurateur and the creator of Nong’s Khao Man Gai Sauce—a beloved kitchen essential.
If you've never tried Nong's Khao Man Gai Sauce, drop everything and head to your neighborhood New Seasons ASAP. Trust us; it's that good—delicious on tofu, stir-fries, chicken, and in marinades.
Five years after arriving in Oregon from Bangkok with just two suitcases and $70, Nong opened her first food cart in 2009—serving Khao Man Gai (chicken and rice) with a side of soup and Nong's signature sauce.
In Thailand, it's not unusual for restaurants to focus on one dish— as long as you do it really, really well. And Nong does. Her food cart was an instant success (even earning her a James Beard nomination!), and today, she serves her famous chicken and rice from two restaurants in Downtown and SE Portland. But it's the sauce that really sets Nong's apart.
Crafted from a special family recipe using all-natural ingredients, Nong's Khao Man Gai Sauce is so many things: bold, tangy, and umami-packed with a balanced mix of salty, garlicky, slightly sweet, and mildly spicy flavors. You can enjoy it at one of Nong's restaurants or at home with her bottled sauce, which is available at New Seasons.
Nong even shared a recipe to show just how delicious her Khao Man Gai Sauce truly is. See recipe below!
