Hatch chile season is here at last, and at New Seasons Market, we're kicking up the heat with roasting tips, a recipe, and seasonal Hatch chile favorites throughout the store.
Every year around this time, a culinary phenomenon sweeps through our stores, delighting our taste buds and making our seasonal recipes shine with a kick of smoky heat. It's Hatch chile season.
Grown exclusively in the Hatch Valley of New Mexico, Hatch chiles are known (and beloved!) for their versatility, balanced heat, and rich flavor.
Hatch chiles can be enjoyed in various ways: raw, stuffed with pimento cheese, or diced into salsa. However, roasting them is one of the most popular methods, bringing out their unique, one-of-a-kind flavor.
On the Grill
Fire up the grill to medium heat and place your chiles directly on the grate until they’re blistered on all sides. Char marks are okay!
In the Oven
Set your oven to Broil. Line a baking sheet with foil and add your chiles, making sure not to crowd them. Pop them in and turn them with tongs until they are blistered and charred on all sides.
Place the hot roasted chiles in a bowl and cover them for about 10 minutes. This allows them to steam, making the skin easier to peel. Once the chiles are cool enough to handle, peel off the skin and remove the seeds.
You can use them immediately, store them in the fridge for a few days, or place them in a freezer-safe bag and store them in the freezer for up to six months.
Hatch chile season is short, but throughout August and, depending on availability, into early September, you can find ready-to-roast Hatch chiles and previously frozen roasted chiles in our produce department (ranging from mild to spicy) and Hatch chile goodness elsewhere throughout the store.
Grab some Hatch chile cornbread or chocolate chip cookies from the bakery. Swing by the deli for the Kale & Fire Roasted Corn Salad with Hatch chiles or try a slice of our seasonal Hatch Chile Chicken Bacon Pizza (not available at New Seasons Sellwood)!
We've also got Hatch chile artisan cheeses, grill-ready sausages and burger patties, salsa, bulk nuts, and more.
